MEN’S BASKETBALL COMES BACK TO BEAT HUNTER 85-82 IN OT

WILLIMANTIC, CT - On December 30, 2024, the Anna Maria College men's basketball team would travel to Willimantic, CT to play the Hawks of Hunter College, in the ECONN tournament. The AMCATS won the game in overtime in 85 to 82. 

The first half, the AMCATS would bring the pressure and the offensive momentum putting up 36 points. Despite the 36 points the AMCATS would put up to go into halftime the Hawks would pull away towards the end of the first half putting up 43 to lead by seven points against the AMCATS at the end of the first half. The AMCATS would look to come out strong in the second half not only putting up offensive points but staying strong defensively to try and pull out a come from behind win against the Hawks. The AMCATS would put their offensive mindset to the test and lock down on defense to take control of the second half against the Hawks. The AMCATS would find themselves putting up multiple points, but it would be the Hawks to continue to pressure the AMCATS refusing to give up. The AMCATS would use their momentum and their strong offensive skills to take  put up 43 and limit the Hawks in the second half to 36 points. The game would come right down to the wire but with the last seconds winding off the clock the AMCATS would complete the come back over the Hawks to tie the game. At the end of regulation the game would be tied 79 to 79, and we would head to overtime to determine the winner in the game. 

In overtime the AMCATS would come out quick in overtime with about 38 seconds in Ray Carter would get the AMCATS on the board in overtime making a three-point shot to add to their lead against the Hawks. The AMCATS would continue to keep the Hawks off the board  and would add to their lead in overtime off a free throw shot from Nolan Serafin. The AMCATS would continue to keep the defensive mindset on the court, limiting the Hawks to just their first two points with about two minutes left in overtime off free throw shots. That would make it just a one-point game, between the AMCATS and the Hawks, with the AMCATS in the lead. The AMCATS would lock it up on defense and would get the Hawks to foul Gabe Armstead with about thirteen second remaining who would sink both foul shots to add to the lead for the AMCATS in overtime. With just about twelve seconds left in overtime, the AMCATS would remain strong on defense and would help to run the clock down to zero giving them the win over the Hawks in dramatic fashion with a score of 85 to 82 in overtime. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Ray Carter would lead the AMCATS on the night with 27 points against the Hawks.
  • Gabe Armstead tallied an impressive 21 points on the evening against the Hawks. 
  • This marks the AMCATS first overtime game this season. 

COMING UP: 

The AMCATS will be back in action on Saturday January 4th, 2025, where they will host the Pilgrims of New Engalnd College for their first Great-NorthEast Athletic Conference game this season. Opening tip-off is set for 12:00pm.
