MEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS OT THRILLER TO MARINERS
PAXTON, MA- On February 4, 2025, the Anna Maria College men's basketball team would host the Mariners of Mitchell College. The AMCATS lost the game in overtime 88 to 86.
The first half, the AMCATS would bring the pressure and the offensive momentum putting up 38 points. Despite the 38 points the AMCATS would put up to go into halftime the Mariners would continue to pressure the AMCATS and were not going away. Despite the Mariners continuing the strong offensive pressure, the AMCATS would lock it down on defense and keep the Mainers off the board at the end of the first half limiting them to 34 points. The AMCATS would take a 38 to 34 lead heading into half time. The AMCATS would look to come out strong in the second half not only putting up offensive points but staying strong defensively to try and pull away from the Mainers and win the game. The AMCATS would put their offensive mindset to the test and lock down on defense to take control of the second half against the Mariners. Despite the control on offense and the defensive pressure from the AMCATS it would be the Mariners to continue to pressure the AMCATS refusing to give up adding to points on the score board. The Mariners continued pressure, and willingness to not give up would lead them to outscoring the AMCATS in the second half of the game 44 to 40. Despite the Mariners outscoring the AMCATS in the second half by four points the AMCATS strong offensive pressure would lead them to still managing 40 points in the second half, which would take the game to overtime, as the game would be tied at the end of regulation, to determine the winner of the game.
In overtime the AMCATS and the Mariners would have a similar story as they did all game, going basket for basketball, putting points up on the scoreboard. The AMCATS would do all they could to lock down on defense and keep up with the offensive pressure. It would be however a back-and-forth game, with both teams putting up points in over time to keep the game continuously tied. It would be the Mariners to pull away by two points with two free throws with about 32 seconds left to play in overtime. It would be Gabe Armstead to get the AMCATS back to tied up, with the Mainers with about 24 seconds left in overtime. The AMCATS would do all they could to keep the Mariners off the board and get the ball back to win it in overtime, despite the willingness of the AMCATS to do all they could to keep the game tied, it would be the Mariners to get two points off a layup with about two seconds left to play in overtime. Despite the strong offensive play from the AMCATS and the continued pressure against the Mariners, the AMCATS would not be able to tie the game with two seconds left in overtime and would fall to the Mariners 88 to 86.
