Women’s Lacrosse Downed By Pride

Paxton, Mass – The Anna Maria College women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-16 nail bitter to the Pride of Regis College in non-conference action tonight at AMCAT Field. With the win Regis improves to 3-2, while the AMCATS' record dips to 1-2 on the season.

Anna Maria was paced by Katie Schebel's (Ludlow, Mass.) third consecutive six goal game, the senior finished with seven points on the night, fellow midfielder Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) had six points including a game-high four assists. Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) and Mackenzie Coakley each found the back of the twine four times.

Regis was led by Grace Politis' seven goals and Teresa Busiek's seven points on six goals and an assist. Freshmen Adena Joseph and Sashae Walls each had two goals.

In the first half Anna Maria took a quick 3-1 lead on a hat trick by Katie Schebel less than three minutes into the game. Regis responded scoring 8 unanswered goals to grab a 9-3 advantage. Freshman attack Grace Politis (Billerica, Mass.) scored four of the eight goals while Teresa Busiek (Arlington, Mass.) had a pair in the Pride's run.

Anna Maria wouldn't back down and after a timeout called by Coach Serratore the Lady AMCATS scored the remaining seven goals of the half. Senior Mackenzie Coakley (Millbury, Mass.) converted a nice pass from behind the net from Amanda Hevy to cut the score to 9-5 at 12:37. Katie Schebel, Sandy Acosta and Hevy each scored 8-meter goals and an unassisted goal by Acosta with 4:28 on the clock gave AMC a 10-9 lead at halftime.

The teams traded 4 goals in the first ten minutes of the second half as Anna Maria protected an slim 12-11 lead, however Regis' sophomore Teresa Busiek found the back of the net twice in thirty seconds, freshman Sashae Walls scored unassisted and Politis converted a free position shot and to gain a 15-12 advantage with 17:56 remaining.

Anna Maria responded with a man-up unassisted goal by Sandy Acosta and another Hevy to Coakley score to cut the deficit to 15-14. Regis outscored the AMCATS 3-2 down the stretch for the hard fought 18-16 win.

AMCAT women's lacrosse returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Lasell College for an 11:00 AM match-up.
