Coulombe Nets Two In Win Over Vikings

SALEM, MA - On Saturday, January 18th the Anna Maria College men's ice hockey team traveled to Salem, MA to take on the Vikings of Salem State University for a MASCAC conference matchup. The AMCATS won the game 5-1.

The AMCATS kicked the game off early with a goal from Guillaume Coulombe just over four minutes into the first period. Coulombes goal came off a back door pass from Max Wennerberg and Tobias Omholt. The first period would close out with a score of 1-0 in favor of the AMCATS.

Just like the first period, Guillaume Coulombe would find the back of the net yet again this time just over five minutes into the period. Coulombes second goal of the day came with some help from Braeden McKinnon on the power play. The AMCATS kept the momentum going as Derek Raposo found the back of the net just two minutes later to improve their lead to 3-0. Shortly after the Vikings found their first of the day, cutting down the AMCATS lead to just two with less than ten minutes to go in the second period. Unfazed, the AMCATS tucked in their fourth goal with the help of Liam Wells and Raposo. The AMCATS led 4-1 at the close of the second period.

The game would see just one more goal in the third period as Braeden McKinnon took the puck down on a breakaway, scoring the AMCATS fifth and final goal with just five minutes left on the clock. McKinnons goal was assisted by Matthew Gilbert and Derek Raposo. Cole Johnston stopped 31 out of 32 shots to help secure the 5-1 victory for the AMCATS.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • The AMCATS broke a six game winning streak for the Vikings including a win over #10 ranked Endicott College.
  • The AMCATS went 100% on the penalty kill against the Vikings marking their 8th time this season.
  • The AMCATS currently average almost four goals per game with 57 so far this season in just 15 games.
  • Cole Johnston earned his second win of the season.
  • There are currently seven AMCATS with 10 or more points.

COMING UP:

The AMCATS will be back in action on Thursday, January 23rd where they will host the Plymouth State University Panthers for a MASCAC conference matchup. Opening puck drop is set for 5:40pm at the Horgan Arena in Auburn, MA.
