Women’s Tennis Season Ends in GNAC Quarterfinals
BOSTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College women's tennis squad collected a 9-0 victory over Anna Maria College Wednesday evening in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament Quarterfinals at the Winsor Courts. With the victory, the Saints improve to 11-6 on the year and advance the GNAC Semifinals for the second consecutive season. The loss ends the AMCats season with an overall record of 3-11.
In singles play, Emmanuel did not drop a game in the No. 4, No.5 and No.6 matches as sophomores Jenny Konecknik (Sparta, N.J.), Jenni Hewes (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and freshman Daniela Tueme (South Easton, Mass.) were able to notch the 6-0, 6-0 straight set victories. Sophomore Alex Hadlock (Framingham, Mass.) and senior Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.) picked up convincing 6-1, 6-0 victories at No. 1 and No. 3 singles while junior Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win out of the No. 2 singles slot.
Hadlock and Woznicki teamed up for the No. 1 doubles pairing to top sophomore Nicole Goudreau (Harrisville, R.I.) and junior Emily Williamson (Spencer, Mass.), 8-4, in the closest match of the night. Reid and Hewes were able to pick up an 8-1 win out of the No. 2 doubles slot while Konecnik and freshman Katrina Gaddis (Wayland, Mass.) also picked up an 8-1 victory out of the No. 3 double pairing, topping juniors Kelly Blake (Southbridge, Mass.) and Casey Harrington (Uxbridge, Mass.).
The Saints will now advance to the 2012 GNAC Semifinal round for a match against the Emerson College Lions on Saturday, October 20 at 6:00 PM at the Winchester Tennis Club in Winchester, Mass. This is a rematch of last season's semifinals showdown between the two squads in which Emerson came away with a 5-4 victory in a match that went down to the wire. The two teams met once during the regular season as the Lions were able to down the Saints, 6-3, on October 9.
The winner of Emmanuel/Emerson semifinal match will face off against the winner of the other semifinal contest featuring the No. 1 seed, Simmons College, vs. the No. 4 seed, Johnson & Wales University in the GNAC Championship on Sunday, Oct. 21 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
