Men's Lacrosse Drops Season Finale at Mount Ida
NEWTON, Mass. – The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team defeated the AMCATS of Anna Maria College on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 16-8. With the win, Mount Ida (9-7, 6-4 GNAC) has solidified the fifth seed in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and will travel to # 4 Norwich University on Wednesday afternoon in GNAC quarterfinal action.
Before the game, the Mount Ida lacrosse program and athletic department recognized seven senior for their contributions and leadership over the course of their Mount Ida career. Seniors recognized were Corey Gelbstein (Greenwich, Conn.), J.T. Hoyt (Westfield, Mass.), Zach Rosen (East Greenwich, R.I.), Zach Davis (Old Saybrook, Conn.), Kyle Cordaro (Worcester, Mass.) Brian Lee (Mashpee, Mass.) and Anthony Genualdo (Peabody, Mass.).
Rosen tallied four points in the contest scoring three goals and adding an assist while becoming the 13th member of the prestigious Mount Ida Lacrosse 100 Point Club. Hoyt recorded two goals and a helper along with Davis who potted one goal and added two assists. Gelbstein grabbed six ground balls along with two caused turnovers while Lee scooped up two ground balls. Cordaro and Genualdo both saw action in between the pipes with both recording four saves each while Cordaro notched his 9th win of the season.
Mount Ida freshman midfielder Jon Berry (Chichester, N.H.) gave the Mustangs the early 1-0 lead just over a minute into the game. Rex Wall (Osterville, Mass.) knotted things up at 1-1 when he tickled the twine for the AMCATS at the 9:55 mark of the opening quarter. Rosen, needing just four points to join the 100 Point Club, recorded his first goal of the day off a feed from Chad Coehlo (Salem, Mass.) to put the Mustangs back on top 2-1. Minutes later Rosen struck again on an unassisted tally that put him within two points of the record books while giving Mount Ida a two goal cushion at 3-1.
As the second quarter got underway Mike Markevich (Westminster, Mass.) upped the Mount Ida lead to 4-1 recording his first of two goals on the afternoon from Berry. After Markevich's marker, Mount Ida fired off five straight goals to take the commanding 9-1 lead with 8:40 remaining in the half. Berry struck again for his second goal of the game off the stick of Rosen who then notched his third goal of the game good for a natural hat trick and putting him into the Mount Ida record books with his 100th point of his career. Hoyt and Markevich (2) each netted unassisted goals while Anna Maria's Rodrigo Henriques (Saugus, Mass.) scored his first goal of the contest. Berry scored a man up goal at the 9:09 mark of the half and freshman midfielder Wyatt Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.) tallied two goals to give the hosts a 12-2 lead at the break.
Mount Ida and Anna Maria opened the third quarter exchanging goals on tallies by Hoyt and Henriques before Paul Studdard (West Haven, Conn.) increased the lead to 14-3 in favor of Mount Ida with 0:34 to go in the third.
Lucas Stralka (East Greenwich, R.I.) netted a hat trick on three unassisted goals to open the fourth quarter for the AMCATS. Hoyt potted the Mustangs' second man up goal of the afternoon from Coehlo before Genualdo tallied his first goal of the season to give Mount Ida the 16-6 lead. Henriques and Stralka each scored the final two goals of the game for Anna Maria in the final 5:27 seconds of the GNAC matchup.
The Mustangs went 6-27 on face-offs while Anna Maria went 21-27. Henriques notched 14 ground balls in the game, most of them coming off the face-off. Anna Maria was 14-15 on clear attempts while the Mustangs were perfect going 12-12.
Mount Ida will head to Northfield, Vermont on Wednesday afternoon to square off against the Cadets of Norwich University in GNAC quarterfinal action in a rematch of last year's conference championship; game time has yet to be determined. Anna Maria finished the season in a tie for 8th place with Albertus Magnus and Johnson and Wales while nearly missing the postseason due to goal differential.
